Gaining credit for his fourth straight victory after an opening loss, Vida Blue, with relief help from Randy Moffitt and Gary Lavelle, pitched the Giants to a 2-1 victory over the Cubs. Willie McCovey drove in both Giants' runs. The first came in the third inning when Terry Whitfield walked, took third on Darrell Evans' single and scored on McCovey's infield out. Whitfield singled in the fifth, moved to second when Evans walked and came around on a single by McCovey.

The Cubs, held hitless until two were out in the sixth, scored in that frame when Ivan DeJesus singled, Manny Trillo walked and Bill Buckner singled. Blue was removed with one out and a runner on first in the ninth. Moffitt retired Dave Kingman on a pop fly and was replaced by Lavelle, who struck out Bobby Murcer to end the game.
