Posting their sixth straight victory, the Red Sox thumped the Royals, 8-4. The Sox jumped to a four-run first-inning lead on a single by Jerry Remy, double by Jim Rice, Carl Yastrzemski's sacrifice fly, an error by Freddie Patek that scored Rice, and a two-run single by Dwight Evans. The Royals came back with three in the third but the Sox added a fourth-inning run on Fred Lynn's homer

The Bosox iced the game in the seventh when Bernie Carbo drew a leadoff walk and, with two out, Rice was walked intentionally. Al Hrabosky replaced Dennis Leonard and Yastrzemski hit the reliever's second pitch into the right field bullpen for a home run. Bob Stanley, who came on for Bosox starter Luis Tiant after the latter pulled a hamstring in his right leg, hurled the final seven frames to get the win.

The Royals twice employed a four-outfielder shift against Rice. In the third inning, Rice flied out to center field against the shift and in the fifth he hit a pop fly that fell for a single behind confused shortstop Patek. [The Sporting News]
