Steve Carlton outdueled Tom Seaver as the Phillies posted a 4-1 triumph over the Reds. Doubles by Richie Hebner and Tim McCarver gave the Phils a 1-0 lead in the second inning and Greg Luzinski made it 2-0 with a homer in the third. Hebner hit a triple, following singles by Mike Schmidt and Luzinski, to give the Phils two more tallies in the eighth.

The Reds' only run came on consecutive singles by Georg eFoster, Johnny Bench and Dave Concepcion in the sixth. Carlton's nine strikeouts raised his career total to 2,337 and moved him past Early Wynn into 19th place on the all-time major league list. [The Sporting News]
