Ozzie Smith tripled with the bases loaded and Dave Winfield followed with the winning single as the Padres rallied for four runs in the seventh inning to defeat the Pirates, 6-5. Rennie Stennett drove in two runs to pace the Pirates to a 5-2 lead before the Padres started their comeback in the seventh when Bob Davis singled, Gene Tenace was hit by a pitch and Gene Richards singled to load the bases and chase Jerry Reuss. Bruce Kison, in relief, was greeted by Smith's triple and then was tagged with the defeat when Winfield hit a high-hopping infield single.
