Mike Ivie, who entered the game after Willie McCovey was hurt in the second inning, drove in three runs with a sacrifice fly and a double to pace the Giants to a 7-6 victory over the Cardinals. McCovey suffered a cut upper lip and two chipped teeth in a collision with Bill Madlock when both were going after a pop fly by Jerry Morales.

With the score tied, 4-4, Madlock singled in the seventh and stole second. The Cards passed Darrell Evans intentionally to get at Ivie, who wrecked the move with his double, driving in Madlock and Evans.
