Using the long ball to their advantage, the Phillies thumped the Reds, 7-4. Mike Schmidt hit a leadoff homer in the sixth inning. Greg Luzinski followed with a double and Richie Hebner then belted a round-tripper.

After George Foster's RBI single had given the Reds a 1-0 lead in the first, the Phils rebounded for three runs when Bud Harrelson and Jay Johnstone doubled, Luzinski walked, Hebner singled, Bob Boone grounded out and Jerry Martin reached first on a fielder's choice. Luzinski hit a solo homer in the seventh before the Reds picked up three runs in the eighth. Foster batted in two with a triple and scored on a groundout by Johnny Bench. [The Sporting News]
