David Clyde, who had not won a major league game since May 15, 1974, tossed a four-hitter and Buddy Bell tripled home two runs to spark the Indians over the A's, 3-2. The Tribe pitcher, making his first major league start since September 19, 1975, shut out the A's until Wayne Gross stroked an RBI double in the seventh inning. The second A's tally came across in the eighth on a wild pitch. The winning runs for the Indians were unearned. A's shortstop Marty Perez booted Larvell Blanks' grounder to start the Tribe eighth. After Tom Veryzer forced Blanks at second and Paul Dade struck out, pinch-hitter Mike Vail singled. Dave Heaverlo replaced Bob Lacey on the hill and Bell followed with the game-winning triple against the right-center fence. [The Sporting News] |
