A wild pitch lifted the Expos to a 5-4 triumph over the Reds. With the score tied, 4-4, Dave Cash led off the bottom of the 11th inning for the Expos with a single and went to second when center fielder George Foster bobbled the ball. After Andre Dawson received an intentional walk, Gary Carter attempted a sacrifice bunt but forced Cash at third. Ellis Valentine then hit into a forceout of Carter at second with Dawson moving to third.

With Tony Perez at bat, Red reliever Dale Murray uncorked a wild pitch which brought Dawson home with the winning run. A two-run homer by Johnny Bench capped a four-run first-inning explosion by the Reds, but the Expos tied the contest with four in the seventh, three coming in on a homer by Warren Cromartie.
