Bill Campbell, who had been out of action with a sore elbow, made his first appearance with the Red Sox since April 30, pitched three scoreless innings and gained credit for a 6-5 victory over the Tigers. Jim Rice hit his 13th homer of the season and 100th of his career for the Red Sox.

Dwight Evans also rapped a round-tripper for the Red Sox, while the Tigers had two-run blows by Phil Mankowski and Milt May. The Red Sox put over the winning run in the ninth inning.
