After seven straight losses, Dave Lemanczyk finally gained his first victory of the season when the Blue Jays erupted for 15 hits and defeated the Yankees, 10-8. After John Mayberry homered with a man on base in the fourth inning to tie the score at 4-4, the Blue Jays nailed down their decision with six runs in the sixth. Oddly, Ken Clay, pitching in relief of Jim Beattie, was the loser without yiedling a hit. With one out in the sixth, Clay walked Mayberry and was removed in favor of Sparky Lyle, who gave up an infield single by Tommy Hutton and hit Otto Velez with a pitch to load the bases. Rick Cerone grounded to Graig Nettles, who threw wildly to second in an attempted forceout, and both Mayberry and Hutton scored. A double by Dave McKay, singles by Luis Gomez and Rick Bosetti and a sacrifice fly by Bob Bailor each added one more run before the inning ended. [The Sporting News] |
