The Phillies broke a tight game apart with five runs in the 11th inning and defeated the Mets, 9-4. Steve Carlton, who started for the Phils, was ripped for three runs by the Mets' first three batters of the game when Lenny Randle and Lee Mazzilli each doubled and Steve Henderson homered. The Phillies came back to take a 4-3 lead, but the Mets chased Carlton and tied the score in the seventh on a pass to Elliott Maddox, safe bunt by Randle and single by Mazzilli.

Dale Murray, making his first appearance with the Mets since being obtained in a deal with the Reds, was on the mound in the 11th when the Phillies erupted. Bake McBride and Larry Bowa singled and, after one out, an intentional pass to Jerry Martin loaded the bases. Davey Johnson singled, driving in McBride and Bowa, and when Bruce Boisclair threw wildly to the plate, Martin also scored.
