. . . where the 1970s live forever!
Jason Thompson's 11th homer of the season snapped a 1-1 tie and lifted the Tigers to a 2-1 victory over the Red Sox in the first game of a doubleheader. The Red Sox pounded out a 9-3 triumph in the second game with reserve catcher Bob Montgomery getting his first four hits of the year and driving in four runs.

In the opener, Thompson's homer pinned Bill Lee with his first loss in seven decisions. Montgomery singled home a run in the fourth inning of the nightcap and Rick Burleson followed with a triple as the Red Sox scored three times to break a 1-1 tie. The Sox added three more tallies in the fifth, two on Montgomery's second single and the other on Fred Lynn's sacrifice fly. Montgomery tripled home the final Boston run in the ninth.
