Tightening their grip on first place in the N. L. East, the Cubs notched a 5-1 triumph over the Phillies. The Cubs scored two runs in the first inning. Bill Buckner drove in one with a single and Dave Kingman added the other with a triple. A single by Manny Trillo plated a tally in the third and Trillo blasted a solo homer in the sixth. The Cubs' last run came in the eighth on a walk to Trillo and triple by Steve Ontiveros. Starting pitcher Rick Reuschel had to leave the game because of stiffness in his right elbow. Bruce Sutter finished up to earn his sixth save of the season. [The Sporting News] |
