Backed by the hitting of Willie McCovey, who drove in five runs, Bob Knepper pitched the Giants to a 6-1 victory over the Dodgers. A single by McCovey accounted for two of the Giants' three runs in the first inning to start Doug Rau on the way to his first defeat of the season.

McCovey then put game on ice with a three-run homer in the fifth. Knepper, who pitched a six-hitter, was deprived of a shutout on a homer by Ron Cey in the ninth. [The Sporting News]
