When the Blue Jays changed pitchers with the bases loaded in the seventh inning, Jim Spencer came up as a pinch-hitter for Cliff Johnson and unloaded a grand slam to power the Yankees to a 4-3 victory. Lou Piniella and Chris Chambliss singled and Graig Nettles walked before Blue Jays' starter Jerry Garvin yielded the mound to Tom Murphy, who served up Spencer's smash.
