Superb relief pitching by John Hiller enabled the Tigers to preserve a 4-3 victory over the Brewers. With the Tigers ahead, 4-3, in the eighth inning, Hiller came on with runners on first and third and one out to strike out Cecil Cooper and get Sal Bando on a fly to left.

Bando hit a two-run homer and the Brewers led, 3-1, going into the bottom of the fifth when the Tigers staged the winning rally. Singles by Phil Mankowski, Alan Trammell, Ron LeFlore and Lou Whitaker tied the score with one out before a fly to center by Rusty Staub gave the Tigers their third straight victory.
