The first grand slam of Billy Smith's career started the Orioles' scoring in the third inning en route to a 10-9 victory over the Mariners. The Orioles loaded the bases on a double by Rick Dempsey, pass to Mark Belanger and single by Larry Harlow before Smith connected for his jackpot wallop off Jim Colborn, who made his first start for the Mariners since being acquired from the Royals.

The Orioles splurged for four more runs in the fourth and picked up a pair in the seventh for a 10-5 lead before the Mariners' rallies fell short. In the ninth, after Leroy Stanton knocked in a run with a double, the Mariners filled the bases with one out, but Bill Stein struck out and John Hale grounded out to end the game.
