Johnny Bench, who was sitting out his fifth game because of a stiff back, came up as a pinch-hitter with two out in the ninth inning and smashed a homer to give the Reds a 3-2 victory over the Pirates. Jim Rooker, the Pirates' losing pitcher, knocked in their two runs with a double in the sixth. The Reds picked up an unearned run in the seventh and tied the score when George Foster hit for the circuit in the eighth. [The Sporting News]
