A homer by Dave Winfield with two men on base in the fifth inning proved to be the Padres' deciding blow in a 5-4 victory over the Mets. The Padres broke a 1-1 tie with a single by Randy Jones, double by Ozzie Smith and grounder by Oscar Gamble, who was safe on an error by Doug Flynn, before Winfield whacked his homer.

Jones went into the eighth with a 5-2 lead but was lifted for Rollie Fingers after John Stearns hit for the circuit with a man on base. The Mets loaded the bases against Fingers with one out in the ninth, but Elliott Maddox hit into a double play to end the game. [The Sporting News]
