Consecutive home runs by Jim Morrison and pinch-hitter Bob Boone in the eighth inning lifted the Phillies to a 4-3 triumph over the Giants. The Giants, on strength of solo homers by McCovey and Evans, took a 2-1 lead into the eighth but pinch-hitter Davey Johnson opened the Phillies' half with a single and Morrison followed with his round-tripper.

Boone batted for winning pitcher Steve Carlton and also a smashed circuit clout. Jose Cardenal accounted for the Phillies' first run with a seventh-inning homer. Bud Harrelson saved the game for the Phils in the ninth with a diving backhanded grab of Vic Harris' smash and turned it into an out to prevent the tying run from scoring. [The Sporting News]
