After winning the first game, 5-4, the Rangers went 13 innings and defeated the Royals again, 3-2, to complete the sweep of a twi-night doubleheader. In the opener, the Rangers built up a 3-1 lead with the aid of triples by Juan Beniquez and Al Oliver before scoring twice more in the fifth on a single by Jim Sundberg, double by Richie Zisk, RBI infield single by Bobby Bonds and shortstop Freddie Patek's throwing error on Bonds' hit. Reggie Cleveland choked off the Royals' three-run rally in the eighth to preserve the victory for Doyle Alexander.

In the nightcap, the score was 2-2 going into the bottom of the 13th when Wills opened by beating out an infield hit. After a steal of second by Wills, Mike Hargrove laid down a sacrifice bunt and reached first safely when reliever Al Hrabosky threw to third too late to get Wills. Oliver received an intentional pass to load the bases, but the runners couldn't advance on Bobby Thompson's fly to shallow center. Marty Pattin relieved Hrabosky and Bonds hit a fly ball to short right, scoring Wills, who narrowly beat Al Cowens' throw to the plate. [The Sporting News]
