. . . where the 1970s live forever!
In a nationally televised game, Rick Reuschel and Ken Holtzman combined on a four-hitter as the Cubs posted a 3-2 triumph over the Reds. The first Cub run came in the third inning on a double by Ivan DeJesus, a long fly by Greg Gross that moved DeJesus to third, and a sacrifice fly by Larry Biittner. Bobby Murcer led off the fourth with a single and went to third on a hit-and-run play as Bill Bonham took the high chopper and threw batter Manny Trillo out at first. Murcer then scored on a fielder's choice grounder by Steve Ontiveros.

In the seventh stanza, DeJesus walked, stole second and scored on a single by Gross. Reuschel was forced to leave the game after six innings because of tightness in his elbow and Holtzman, making his first appearance for the Cubs since coming over from the Yankees, finished up, yielding a homer to George Foster in the seventh and a leadoff triple to Pete Rose in the ninth.
