The Padres rallied for two runs in the ninth inning to win a 3-2 squeaker from the Mets. A solo homer by John Stearns in the seventh had given the Mets a 2-1 lead. Ozzie Smith opened the Padres' ninth with a single off Pat Zachry. Pinch-hitter Chuck Baker hit into a forceout but Dave Winfield doubled home pinch-runner Derrel Thomas to tie the game and Dale Murray replaced Zachry. The reliever walked Oscar Gamble, and Fernando Gonzalez then delivered a single to lift the Padres to triumph.
