An excellent relief job by Doug Bair saved the game as the Reds edged the Cubs, 1-0. The reliever came on in the ninth inning with runners on first and third and one out and struck out Dave Kingman and Manny Trillo on six pitches.

The lone run of the contest came in the fourth frame when George Foster led off with a drive to right field that bounced off Gene Clines' glove for a three-base error. Foster remained at third when Dan Driessen grounded out, but after Cesar Geronimo was hit by a pitch, Foster scored on a sacrifice fly by Don Werner. [The Sporting News]
