Brilliant relief pitching by Manny Sarmiento preserved a 4-2 victory for the Reds over the Cardinals. Sarmiento entered the game in the sixth inning with the Reds ahead, 3-2, runners on first and second and nobody out. An error by Dave Concepcion filled the bases, but Sarmiento then fanned Ken Reitz and induced Mike Tyson to bounce into a double play. He allowed only one hit the rest of the way.

The Reds got three runs in the second on three infield hits and a sacrifice fly. Their final tally in the seventh resulted from a typical demonstration of Cardinal futility. Pete Rose hit a routine fly ball to center field, but Tony Scott and Jerry Mumphrey collided, permitting Rose to reach third. Ken Griffey followed with a sacrifice fly. [The Sporting News]
