Scattering nine hits, Bert Blyleven pitched the Pirates to a 6-1 breeze over the Cubs. Ken Holtzman, making his first start as a Cub since September 6, 1971, absorbed the loss. The Pirates' scoring began in the fourth inning when singles by Dave Parker and Bill Robinson and a walk to Rennie Stennett loaded the bases before Holtzman hit Duffy Dyer with a pitch to force in a run. Omar Moreno then bounced a single over second to make it 2-0 and Stennett scored when shortstop Ivan DeJesus threw wildly on an attempted force at second. Stennett singled home a run in the fifth and Phil Garner doubled home a run in the sixth before a solo homer by Willie Stargell in the seventh closed out the Pirate scoring. [The Sporting News] |
