A grand-slam homer by Fred Stanley capped a seven-run fourth inning and lifted the Yankees to a 10-4 triumph over the Red Sox. The Yanks, held hitless for the first three frames, started their big rally with a leadoff single by Willie Randolph. Thurman Munson followed with an infield hit, Graig Nettles singled to left and Gary Thomasson doubled in two tallies. Jim Spencer drew an intentional walk to load the sacks and Stanley, a .226 career hitter with only five lifetime homers, lofted a pitch into the left field screen.

It was the second career grand slam for Stanley, starting at shortstop in place of the injured Bucky Dent. Reggie Jackson hit a three-run homer in the ninth to increase the Yankee margin. [The Sporting News]
