A single by Frank Taveras with two out in the ninth inning lifted the Pirates to a 2-1 victory over the Cubs. With one out in the ninth, Phil Garner singled and moved all the way to third on a sacrifice bunt by John Candelaria. Third baseman Mick Kelleher fielded the bunt and threw out Candelaria and when nobody covered third, Garner kept going. Taveras then stroked his hit to left to end the game.

The Cubs opened the scoring in the third on a triple by Ivan DeJesus and single by Gene Clines. But the Pirates tied the contest in the bottom of that frame on a single by Garner, walk to Candelaria, sacrifice bunt by Taveras and single by Omar Moreno. [The Sporting News]
