Unbeaten Ron Guidry posted his 12th straight victory as the Yankees beat the Tigers, 4-2. The ace lefty gave up a leadoff homer to Ron LeFiore in the first inning but stopped Tigers until the ninth when he was relieved by Rich Gossage after walking leadoff batter Jason Thompson. Gossage wild-pitched a run home before closing out the game.

All the Yankee scoring came in the ninth. Reggie Jackson hit a one-out solo homer to tie the score and Chris Chambliss reached first on an error by second baseman Lou Whitaker. A single by Graig Nettles sent Chambliss to third and pinch-hitter Lou Piniella singled to center to plate Chambliss. An infield hit by Fred Stanley and bloop single by Roy White drove in the final two runs. [The Sporting News]
