The rampaging Red Sox increased their lead in A.L. East to 9½ games by defeating the Yankees, 4-1. The Sox were stymied until the fifth inning when Yankee infielders Fred Stanley and Damaso Garcia collided chasing Butch Hobson's pop in shallow left field and the ball dropped for a two-base error. After an out, Jim Rice lined the ball into the right field bleachers. In the sixth stanza, Fred Lynn singled and scored on a double by Carlton Fisk. Fisk hit a solo home run in the eighth inning.
