The cellar-dwelling Cardinals rose up and beat the Pirates twice, 2-0 and 6-1. The Cardinals' runs in the opener came on a homer by Garry Templeton leading off the game and a double by Ken Reitz in the fourth inning, scoring Keith Hernandez, who had opened the frame with an infield single. Pete Vuckovich pitched strongly but was relieved in the ninth with a runner on second and one out. Buddy Schultz came on to retire the last two Bucs. The second game was interrupted twice by rain for more than two hours. Jerry Reuss started for the Pirates and gave up six hits without getting an out. Templeton opened with a triple and the next five batters singled with Jerry Mumphrey, Ted Simmons and George Hendrick each driving in runs. Reuss was lifted for Ed Whitson, who gave up a sacrifice fly to Reitz. Pete Falcone scattered nine hits in seven innings to win for the first time this year. [The Sporting News] |
