Two-hit pitching by Pat Zachry and a grand-slam homer by Lee Mazzilli gave the Mets a 4-0 victory in the first game of a doubleheader, but the Phillies rebounded to capture the nightcap, 3-2, on a pinch-hit homer by Jose Cardenal in the ninth inning. In the opener, a one-out single by Doug Flynn started the Mets' big inning. After a sacrifice by Zachry, Lenny Randle received an intentional walk and Tim Foli drew another pass to load the bases. Mazzilli cleared the sacks by slamming a 3-2 pitch into the seats.

The Mets had a 2-1 lead going into the ninth inning of the second game. With two out and nobody on, Bob Boone stroked a two-base hit and was replaced by pinch-runner Randy Lerch. Cardenal batted for Bud Harrelson and connected for the game-winning circuit clout. [The Sporting News]
