The Rangers swept past the Yankees, 3-2, as Jon Matlack went the route for the ninth time this season. A single by Bobby Thompson opened the Ranger third and Bobby Bonds followed with a homer that cleared the 370-foot mark in left against a strong wind.

In the eighth, Bonds singled and moved to third when losing pitcher Don Gullett made a throwing error on Toby Harrah's sacrifice attempt. Bonds was thrown out at the plate on a fielder's choice with Harrah moving to third. Richie Zisk then drove in the game-winning run with a grounder to right field. [The Sporting News]
