Turning four errors into as many unearned runs, the Yankees dumped the Rangers, 7-2, behind the steady pitching of Dick Tidrow. The Yankees took a 2-0 lead in the first inning on an infield hit by Mickey Rivers, triple by Roy White and sacrifice fly by Thurman Munson. In the second, after a walk to Gary Thomasson, Bobby Bonds misplayed Bucky Dent's double, allowing Thomasson to score. After Fred Stanley drew a walk, Jim Umbarger replaced Doc Medich on the mound. Rivers dribbled a grounder back to Umbarger, who threw to second for an attempted force play. But Bert Campaneris dropped the ball, loading the bases. A sacrifice fly by White then scored Dent.
