Willie McCovey broke a 2-2 tie with a single in the eighth inning and Hector Cruz followed with a double for an insurance run, leading the Giants to a 4-2 victory over the Reds. The Giants counted twice in the second on two walks, an error by Joe Morgan and a grounder by Marc Hill.

The Reds chased John Montefusco in the sixth, loading the bases on a single by Pete Rose, double by Morgan and pass to George Foster, bringing Gary Lavelle to the mound for the Giants.
