Combining Cincinnati misplays with their own timely hitting, the Mets toppled the Reds, 4-2. The Mets' scoring against Tom Seaver began in the second when John Stearns singled, stole second, continued to third on catcher Johnny Bench's throwing error and scored when Steve Henderson's grounder was booted by shortstop Dave Concepcion. Henderson then stole second, advanced to third on a wild pitch and scored on a sacrifice fly by Doug Flynn.

A double by Flynn, sacrifice bunt by winning pitcher Jerry Koosman and sacrifice fly by Lenny Randle gave the Mets another marker in the fifth. Joel Youngblood led off the Mets' eighth by tagging reliever Manny Sarmiento's first pitch for a home run.
