Fernando Gonzalez drove in five runs with his first two homers of the season to power the Padres to a 9-5 victory over the Cubs. Gene Tenace also homered for the Padres. The Cubs had round-trippers by Dave Roberts, their losing pitcher, and Larry Biittner.

The Cubs chased both Eric Rasmussen and Mickey Lolich while rallying for three runs in the seventh inning, but Rollie Fingers came in and gained his 20th save. Fingers' performance enabled Rasmussen to pick up his sixth straight victory and the first of his career over the Cubs to whom he had lost six times. [The Sporting News]
