The Royals dealt another blow at the sinking Yankees by beating the New Yorkers, 9-7, in 11 innings. Four runs in the top of the 11th were enough to withstand a Yank rally in the bottom of the frame. The outburst began with Hal McRae drawing a base on balls and being replaced by pinch-runner U.L. Washington. A sacrifice by John Wathan moved Washington to second. Amos Otis then hit a long fly to right that Thurman Munson dropped for an error, Washington moving to third and Otis winding up at second. Darrell Porter was given an intentional walk to load the bases. After Clint Hurdle bounced into a force out at the plate, Willie Wilson drew a walk to force in a run.

Rich Gossage thought his last pitch to Wilson was a strike and was ejected for swearing at second base umpire Durwood Merrill. Bob Kammeyer replaced Gossage and was greeted by a two-run single by Freddie Patek and an RBI single by Frank White.
