A sacrifice fly by Pete Rose in the 14th inning lifted the Reds to a 5-4 victory over the Expos. Pinch-hitter Rick Auerbach opened the 14th with a walk, moved to second on a wild pitch and to third on a sacrifice bunt by Dave Concepcion. Ken Griffey hit an infield single with Auerbach holding third, but Rose then hit a fly bail to right to plate the winning tally.

The Reds had a 4-0 lead but the Expos came back to kayo Tom Seaver in the eighth and tie the score. Rose stroked a single in the sixth inning, extending his consecutive games hitting streak to 36, just one short of the modern N.L. record set by Tommy Holmes of the Boston Braves in 1945.
