Pete Rose extended his modern N. L. record hitting streak to 39 games but Joel Youngblood drove in five runs with a two-run homer and a bases-loaded triple to lead the Mets to a 12-3 rout of the Reds. Rose doubled to lead off the fifth inning.

After getting three runs in their first turn at bat, the Mets added three more in the third on a double by Steve Henderson, walk to Willie Montanez, infield hit by John Stearns and Youngblood's triple.
