Making only his third start of the season, Paul Hartzell was able to pitch the Angels to a 2-1 victory over the Orioles when Joe Rudi drove in the winning run with a single in the ninth inning for his 47th RBI of the season and 41st since June 1. The Orioles counted their run in the third on a double by Elrod Hendricks and a single by Rich Dauer.

Rudi and Brian Downing singled in the eighth and, after a bunt by Bobby Grich, Rudi scored the tying run on a sacrifice fly by Rick Miller. Ron Jackson singled with one away in the ninth and was forced by Don Baylor. But Baylor then stole second and continued to third on a throwing error by Hendricks before Rudi came through with his game-winning hit. [The Sporting News]
