Collared in six trips since coming up from the minors, Ed Putman knocked in two runs with a single in the eighth inning to give the Cubs a 5-3 victory over the Giants. The Cubs, who had a homer by Bobby Murcer, were losing, 3-2, going into the eighth before starting a rally with singles by Greg Gross, Murcer and Larry Biittner to load the bases. Manny Trillo then flied to right field and when catcher John Tamargo had trouble handling Jack Clark's throw, Gross scored the tying run on what was scored a sacrifice fly.
