Regaining sole possession of first place in the Western division, the Giants swept a doubleheader from the Cubs, 4-2 and 1-0. Wild pitches by Cub starter Rick Reuschel helped the Giants in the opener. In the third inning, Bill Madlock doubled, went to third on an infield out and scored on a wild pitch. A double by Darrell Evans and single by Mike Ivie put the Giants ahead, 2-1, in the fourth and the winning run came in the sixth on a walk to Evans, an infield out, a wild pitch and a sacrifice fly by Jim Dwyer.

The only run of the second game came in the fourth inning on consecutive singles by Jack Clark, Ivie and Hector Cruz. Vida Blue picked up his 15th victory, tops in the league. [The Sporting News]
