. . . where the 1970s live forever!
Struggling for a doubleheader split, the Yankees won the first game, 4-3, and the Twins captured the second contest, 2-0. Ron Guidry, going for his 16th victory, went 6 2/3 innings in the lidlifter and was removed after an error by Lou Piniella allowed the tying run to score. The Yankees won it in the eighth when Reggie Jackson singled, Graig Nettles forced him at second, Roy White walked and Jim Spencer got a pinch-hit two-bagger.

The nightcap was scoreless going into the ninth inning when Roy Smalley led off with a double and went to third on an infield hit by Rod Carew. Sparky Lyle replaced Jim Beattie on the mound for the Yankees and was greeted by a pinch-hit single by Jose Morales, scoring Smalley. Butch Wynegar then bunted and when Lyle attempted to throw out Carew at third, he bounced the ball off the runner into left field, allowing Carew to score. [The Sporting News]
