Scoring five runs in the first three innings, the Tigers outlasted the Mariners, 5-4. Detroit opened with two runs in their first turn at bat. Ron LeFlore singled, stole second and eventually scored on a sacrifice fly by Jason Thompson. A single by Steve Kemp drove in Lou Whitaker, who had reached first on a walk.

Whitaker tripled a run across in the third and scored on a single by Rusty Staub. Staub moved to second on a groundout and scored on a single by Kemp. [The Sporting News]
