A home run by Otto Velez in the 14th inning gave the Blue Jays an 8-7 victory over the Tigers. The game-winning blow, off losing pitcher Bob Sykes, came on a 2-2 pitch. The Tigers trailed, 6-3, going into the top of the ninth but staged a three-run outburst to deadlock the game.

They went ahead in the top of the 10th on a leadoff homer by Lance Parrish, but the Jays tied the contest in the bottom of the frame when Rico Carty led off with a walk against reliever Steve Foucault. Pinch-runner Dave McKay advanced to second on a wild pitch. Sykes relieved Foucault and gave up a sacrifice to Willie Upshaw and a sacrifice fly to Alan Ashby. [The Sporting News]
