Extending their winning skein to five games -- their longest of the season -- the Cardinals jolted the Phillies twice, 2-0 and 6-2. Pete Vuckovich tossed a four-hitter in the first game. Singles by Lou Brock and Garry Templeton and a double by Ted Simmons gave the Redbirds a run in the opening frame and the other tally came in the third when Brock singled, advanced to second on a wild pitch and scored on a single by Keith Hernandez.

In the second contest, Tom Bruno, making his first major league start, hurled seven strong innings to get credit for the victory. The Cards snapped a 1-1 tie with four runs in the third. Jerry Mumphrey led off with a single, and after a walk to Ken Oberkfell, George Hendrick lined a double to plate Mumphrey. Hernandez drew a walk and Jim Lonborg was given the hook in favor of Warren Brusstar. After Oberkfell scored on a fielder's choice grounder by Tony Scott, Steve Swisher and Mike Phillips capped the uprising with RBI singles. [The Sporting News]
