The Padres' string of 11 straight victories at home was broken when the Reds scored twice in the ninth inning to win the pitchers' duel, 2-0. Bob Owchinko baffled the Reds on four hits until one out in the ninth when Dave Concepcion walked and raced home on a double by George Foster. Owchinko then passed Johnny Bench and Ken Henderson to load the bases before being removed.

Rollie Fingers, in relief, struck out Dan Driessen but Doug Bair singled, driving in Foster, to clinch the victory. Bair came in to pitch for the Reds after Bill Bonham went out for a pinch-hitter in the eighth. [The Sporting News]
