A combination of error and rain enabled the Yankees to defeat the Orioles, 2-1, in a game that was abbreviated to 5½ innings because of wet grounds. The contest was delayed for two hours, 27 minutes before the umpires called it. Catfish Hunter held the Orioles to four hits, including a homer by Ken Singleton in the first inning.

The Yankees rallied against Dennis Martinez in the fourth. With one out, Chris Chambliss and Reggie Jackson singled and Jay Johnstone walked to load the bases. Gary Thomasson then grounded to Rich Dauer, who threw to Kiko Garcia, forcing Johnstone at second, but Garcia fired wildly to first base in an attempt to complete the double play and both Chambliss and Jackson scored.
