A homer by Dan Driessen in the top of the 10th inning enabled the Reds to post a 4-3 triumph over the Pirates. The Reds had tied the game with two out in the ninth. Ken Henderson walked and, after Kent Tekulve relieved Grant Jackson, Cesar Geronimo sacrificed Rick Auerbach, the pinch-runner for Henderson, to second. Pinch-hitter Johnny Bench fanned, but Pete Rose smashed a hit off the glove of second baseman Phil Garner to plate the tying tally.
